Bethesda dropped the fattest stink bomb the gaming industry has seen in a decade

Blizzard put two shots in the back of Diablo’s head

Sony not doing E3, necking Japanese devs

Microsoft hasn’t been relevant in gaming since the XBone’s subpar release

Meanwhile Nintendo is fucking drowning in Switch success because they actually know how to, y’know, make video games.

Who knew Nintendos strategy of ‘Just, like, make game’ would be the winner?

remember last week when nintendo sued a family for $12million for pirating games that have been out of print for decades

such heroic saviors of videogames

Also “Just, like, make game” was their strategy with the Wii U. Which was a commercial failure. Their strategy with the Switch is “Just, like, re-release game we made and charge 60 dollars for it”

I think their devs put out some great games and they’re the last big bastion of japanese game design but everyone gives them way too much goodwill, some of the shit they pull as a publisher and console maker would not fly anywhere else. And this narrative that they’re always “just making good games!” is inaccurate and contributes to them continuing to do really not at all fair things and not get challenged on them because they have near-infinite goodwill.

nintendo has a lot of really fantastic IPs under its belt, and a lot of classic games with a shit ton of nostalgia and the near-infinite goodwill you’re mentioning stems largely from those factors as well as their general refusal to go the ‘gritty realism sells’ that a lot of mainstream series on ps/xbox go, opting more for their well-known fantasy look & feel

however as it stands even as someone who is incredibly fond of gaming experiences nintendo has brought me, their actual business practices and their often boneheaded release/distribution garbage are both shitty and greedy and should rightly be criticized, on top of the whole emulation fiasco which is just upsetting

this but i’m in no way fond of nintendo and am well aware of them having always been a shitty and predatory force in the global market. there’s a reason nintendo games don’t get much third party releases from developers who had to work with them when they were a monopoly, people.
