One time my friends and I realized that you only have to be 18 to rent a U-Haul (compared to 25 to rent a regular car), so we fuckin’ rented a U-Haul pickup truck for $20 and took it up to Seattle just to hit the town for the day.
That’s an amazing loophole to exploit.
I used to do this all the time when I lived in Hawaii and didn’t want to rely on the bus to get me home from the other side of the island. Some tips:
1. Return it as clean as you got it, and be polite to the rental guy. They know perfectly well what you’re doing and as long as you are nice they’ll keep forgetting to tell the company insurance what’s up.
2. If you don’t have uhaul in your area nearly every moving company has pickups, shop around for price.
3. While shopping around, mind things like gas charges, cleaning fees and late return policy. Adjust your plans to be back in plenty of time to fill up the tank and take out all your stuff/trash/give it a wipe down of needed, even in the event of traffic/roadwork.
4. If you think there’s a chance you might end up staying overnight, get the extra day, because the late fees are rough.
Not sure of any place’s individual policy about this but home improvement stores are also a source of rentable pickup trucks.
